Maranta arundinacea L.is a perennial herb of the Marantaceae family native to South America,with a cultivation history of more than 7 000 years.It is a characteristic vegetable with high nutritional and economic values.Maranta arundinacea L.adapts well to sandy soil and features strong disease and pest resistance,belonging to a crop suitable for extensive management.It is planted at the early rainy season,requiring 2-3 times of field weeding and soil ridging,and can be harvested 9-10 months after planting,being suitable for large-scale cultivation and household planting.As a gluten-free and easily digestible functional vegetable,arrowroot is rich in starch,dietary fiber,phosphorus,potassium and other minerals.It also contains bioactive substances such as alkaloids and flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects,and can be processed into a variety of foods to enrich the diversity of vegetable germplasm resources.With low chemical input during cultivation,Maranta arundinacea L.can be intercropped with leguminous crops,which not only increases farmers’ income,but also ensures emergency grain supply and improves regional food security level.At present,there are still deficiencies in systematic research,technical support and market promotion of Maranta arundinacea L.,showing huge development potential.It is of great significance for promoting agricultural diversification,facilitating local agricultural sustainable development,realizing the exploitation of diversified vegetable resources,and benefiting public health.
